Course Information

The Course

The Professional Scrum Master II (PSM II) course is a deeper, more advanced exploration of the role of the Scrum Master and how they work with their Scrum Team and organisation. The course explores the stances and choices that a Scrum Master will make, all from the perspective of Servant Leadership. This two (2) day interactive course engages participants in exercises to build practices and skills that will enable them to be more confident within their role.

Over the 2 days, students will learn about areas critical to growing as a successful Scrum Master. They'll learn how the principles and values of Scrum help guide Scrum Masters in the decisions they make and how the Scrum Master can help change the environment of Scrum Teams, creating an environment for agility to thrive. The Scrum Master role is complex and often, a Scrum Master must be able to apply different stances in order to be effective, such as:

  • The Scrum Master as a Teacher
  • The Scrum Master as a Coach & Mentor
  • The Scrum Master as a Facilitator
  • The Scrum Master as a Change Agent

As a Scrum Master, part of your role is to help management and other stakeholders across your organisation understand the benefits of Scrum and Agile. Therefore, it is imperative that you have the information and background that is needed to gain credibility in order to be an effective change agent. Throughout the class, your Professional Scrum Trainer (PST) will provide stories, exercises, facilitation techniques (such as “Liberating Structures”), resources and more. There will also be time in class for the PST to provide coaching on challenges that you and your classmates may be experiencing today.

  • Explore practices, tools, skills and stances make an effective Scrum Master
  • Develop an understanding of how working as servant-leader enhances the effectiveness of the Scrum Master
  • Explain how the Scrum principles and values help guide decisions that a Scrum Master will make
  • Explore how the Scrum Master can support the Development Team, Product Owner and Scrum Team to be more effective
  • Describe ways that the Scrum Master acts to make the environment around the Scrum Team more supportive to agility
  • Provide tips and techniques for the Scrum Master to work with the rest of the organization in support of their Scrum Team

This is an advanced course designed to help people explore the role of a Scrum Master. Using the mindset of Servant Leadership, we will dive deep into how a Scrum Master serves the Scrum Team, Product Owner, Development Team and Organisation. During the class we build on the practices, skills and techniques that will enable a Scrum Master to have the right types of conversations and be more effective in their role.

This is specifically designed for experienced Scrum practitioners who have a thorough understanding of the Scrum Framework and experience in building a product with the framework. It is particularly useful for people who have had at least a year of Scrum Master experience.

This is an active and collaborative workshop, where case studies, discussions and exercises guide the discussions for the class. During the course group work is used to explore the learning objectives.

Attendees make the most of the class if they:

  • Have studied the Scrum Guide (required)
  • Have passed the Scrum Open assessment
  • Have a solid understanding of Scrum either through working on a Scrum Team, or through having taken part in a Professional Scrum Foundations or similar course
  • Have been on or are closely involved in building or enhancing a software product or application using Scrum
